About Us

The McMillan Family Trust, formerly known as The Jordan Youth Development Trust, was registered as a Charity in 2007 by Terry McMillan, a Southwark based businessman and his wife Sheron McMillan, a businesswoman.

Terry and Sheron grew up in Hackney and Mitcham respectively, both from underprivileged backgrounds, but most importantly from encouraging family atmospheres – a key ingredient in the success they have both achieved. It is very much their belief that all young people have the potential to flourish if given the right grounding in life.

The aim of The McMillan Family Trust is to provide this grounding for young people who might not otherwise enjoy that benefit. It does this by providing positive role models for young people, recognising latent talent, and nurturing the potential within young people.

Challenge

  • 36% of children in poverty are not achieving a good level of development.

  • In 2019, almost 1 in 5 children left school at 18 without reaching Level 2 attainment.

  • A study of more than 1,000 children aged 10 to 16 in England has found more than 25% of them did not have a role model to look up to.

  • In 2019, 39% of the children in London are living in poverty.

  • 18% of children leave school as low achievers.

  • In England, young people without a positive figure of the same gender are 67% more likely to be unemployed.

There are far too many under-privileged young people who struggle to find and achieve their potential. Racial stereotyping, learning difficulties, a lack of facilities and a lack of positive role models are few challenges which often prevent these children from having ambition.

Solution

To help solve this problem we prioritise the development of those young people in need through a range of campaigns, activities and fundraising events aimed at improving skills, confidence and providing the role models needed.
