Book-writing Competition

Date: 2009

The book-writing competition, which took place when the charity was formerly known as The Jordan Youth Development Trust was carried out in partnership with Incipient Minds, a charity which was set up to enhance young people’s potential for the future as citizens and effective employees. The project had been carefully devised to develop the creative talent in young minds and for that talent to be recognised.

As part of the competition, 192 children and young adults across 8 classes participated by writing about who they are, what had made them who they are and what identity meant to them. The top 3 pieces were chosen from each of the classes, those 24 were judged by the teachers, and a further final top 3 was chosen from this group.

After a successful fundraising campaign, the top 3 students were able to attend the LifeBeat camp, in addition to funds being spent on a trip to see Blood Brothers at the theatre for the 24 runner-ups, a new set of books on humanism and a donation to the City of London Academy for the Humanities department, to ensure it remained being used in connection to help young people in society.

We received great feedback from the participants and due to the projects success, the concept was adopted into the next year’s curriculum.
